Wilderness Expedition to Davidson Glacier: A Day in Haines, Alaska

Westerdam, Holland America Line, Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice

Our adventure began on a crisp Alaskan morning in Haines, where we visited the Haines Sheldon Museum and the Hammer Museum. These local treasures offered us a glimpse into the rich history and unique culture of the area, setting the stage for an unforgettable day.

In the afternoon, we embarked on an outstanding wilderness expedition to the spectacular Davidson Glacier. The journey led us through fjords, rainforests, colorful wildflowers, and towering mountains, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Alaska.

Boat Ride on the Fjord to Glacier Point

Our adventure commenced with a thrilling 40-minute ride on a high-speed, 26-passenger expedition boat through North America’s deepest fjord. As we navigated the waters of the Chilkoot Inlet, we marveled at the stunning contrast of the two-colored water and kept our eyes peeled for whales, seals, and Steller sea lions. Cascading waterfalls adorned the cliffs, adding to the scenic splendor.

Forest Walk and Canoeing to Davidson Glacier

Upon reaching a remote beach at Glacier Point, we boarded a 4-wheel drive safari bus for a short journey across the forested glacial moraines. A quarter-mile walk brought us to a breathtaking view of Davidson Glacier, where crystal-blue ice tumbled from jagged peaks into a pristine lake.

Equipped with life jackets and paddles, we boarded a 31-foot voyager canoe for a serene paddle towards the glacier’s face. The water was calm, reflecting the towering mountains and vibrant greenery around us. Conditions permitting, we had the option to walk half a mile over sand and pebbles to touch the glacier, an awe-inspiring experience that connected us deeply with nature.

Return to Haines

Reboarding the boat for our return trip to Haines, we reflected on the day’s experiences. The combination of natural beauty, adventure, and the serene ambiance of the Alaskan wilderness made this an unforgettable day on our Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice cruise with the Westerdam, Holland America Line.

In the heart of Haines, where history breathes,
Morning dawns with whispers of yesteryears.
We stroll through halls where stories weave,
At Sheldon and Hammer, time disappears.

Afternoon calls with a siren's song,
To fjords deep and waters two-hued,
On a vessel swift, we glide along,
Where seals and sea lions view.

Cascading falls, a symphony of mist,
Mountains rise like guardians tall.
Nature's beauty, impossible to resist,
Enchants us, leaves us in thrall.

Ashore at Glacier Point, we tread,
Through forests dense, where shadows play.
A quarter-mile walk where green is spread,
To the glacier’s edge, we make our way.

In a voyager canoe, we softly glide,
On waters calm, reflections clear.
Toward crystal ice, where secrets hide,
Nature’s wonders, oh so near.

The glacier’s face, a sight to behold,
Blue ice tumbling from peaks above.
A half-mile walk on pebbles cold,
To touch the ancient ice we love.

With guides whose knowledge knows no bounds,
We learn of lands both wild and free.
In Alaska’s arms, our hearts are found,
Amongst the fjords and towering trees.

Our journey ends as day fades to night,
Back to Haines, where adventures start.
With memories made of sheer delight,
Alaska’s beauty warms the heart.
