Westerdam, Holland America Line, Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice: Exploring Juneau

Today started not as the best day of our cruise because of the weather. It was very foggy, and two of our eagerly anticipated excursions got canceled: the Dog Sledding & Glacier Adventure by Helicopter and the Evening Whale Quest Featuring Alaska Cuisine. Despite this setback, the shore excursions team did a fantastic job arranging an alternative for us: the Sentinel Island Lighthouse & Whale Watching Cruise.

We embarked on our new adventure, setting sail towards the historic Sentinel Island Lighthouse. The whale-watching cruise offered a cozy, heated cabin where we sipped hot coffee and enjoyed the stunning outside viewing areas. As we cruised along, we watched for humpback whales, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, bald eagles, and other marine animals. The onboard guide shared fascinating insights into the history of area lighthouses and the behaviors of the whales we hoped to see.

While on board, we indulged in locally-made Alaska fudge, granola bars, caribou sausage sticks, and hot beverages, which added a delightful touch to the experience. Upon arriving at Sentinel Island, we took a scenic walk that provided breathtaking views of Lynn Canal and the surrounding islands and waterways. Approaching the lighthouse, we reflected on its long-standing role in maritime history since its construction in 1902. Climbing the tower, we inspected the beacon and marveled at the expansive vista across Lynn Canal, imagining the isolated life of a “wickie,” as lighthouse keepers were nicknamed, and what it would have been like to live there for a few years.

Back on the boat, we enjoyed a short ride to Yankee Cove, where we met up with our driver for a narrated trip. The journey included a stop at the Brotherhood Bridge viewpoint, offering a spectacular view of Mendenhall Glacier. This final leg of the excursion brought together Alaska’s rich history, abundant wildlife, and epic scenery, creating a truly memorable experience.

Despite the foggy start and initial cancellations, we had a very good day and were fortunate to see many whales. The excursion turned out to be a fantastic alternative, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and history of Juneau from both the sea and the land.

On the Westerdam, we sailed under skies so gray,
Fog's gentle kiss led our hearts astray.
Two dreams dissolved in the morning's embrace,
Yet hope found us in this northern place.

No dog sledding on glaciers, no evening whale feast,
But the shore team's kindness never ceased.
They charted a course for new shores unseen,
To Sentinel Island, where the waves gleam.

Aboard our vessel, warmth and stories entwined,
In the cabin's glow, where coffee's steam aligned.
Outside, the sea danced, a wild, untamed art,
As whales sang their secrets, a symphony's start.

Steller sea lions lounged, porpoises played,
Bald eagles soared in the misty parade.
With Alaska fudge and caribou's delight,
We savored each moment, each marvelous sight.

Sentinel Island rose, a sentinel true,
Lynn Canal’s waters framed in pristine blue.
We walked ancient paths where keepers once stood,
In solitude’s echo, where dreams withstood.

Up the lighthouse tower, we climbed with care,
To glimpse the vast world from a beacon's stare.
Maritime whispers of history’s lore,
Imagining lives on this isolated shore.

The journey continued, Yankee Cove our next quest,
Where glaciers greeted us, nature's grandest guest.
Brotherhood Bridge, a view so divine,
Mendenhall’s glacier, a frozen timeline.

Alaska's tales woven in wildlife's grace,
In each creature's glance, a story's embrace.
Foggy dawns turned to sunlit delight,
As whales danced onward, into the night.

Our day, reborn from the mist’s tight hold,
In the heart of Juneau, adventures bold.
From sea to shore, our spirits took flight,
In the embrace of Alaska, the solstice’s light.
