Our Ketchikan adventure began with an exhilarating visit to the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where we marveled at the skills and strength of the lumberjacks in a thrilling display of log rolling, axe throwing, and tree climbing. The show set the tone for an exciting day, showcasing the rugged spirit of Alaska.
Next, we embarked on the Off-Road UTV Safari, Cruise, Crab, & Craft Beers excursion aboard the Westerdam, promising a perfect blend of adrenaline and relaxation.
We continued with a scenic drive through Ketchikan, leading us to the UTV Base Camp nestled within a protected rain forest property. Here, we received a thorough safety briefing before donning our protective gear and setting out caravan style into the wild terrain. The 60-minute, adrenaline-fueled guided trek took us over bridges, along old logging roads, and through the awe-inspiring George Inlet Fjords and Mahoney Glacial Cirque. The off-road experience was exhilarating, providing stunning views and a close-up encounter with Alaska’s pristine wilderness.
Following our off-road adventure, we climbed aboard a 46-foot enclosed sightseeing vessel for a scenic cruise to George Inlet Lodge. The seven-mile journey along the coast was mesmerizing, with opportunities to spot wildlife, including the majestic eagles soaring above. The vessel’s enclosed design ensured a comfortable ride as we soaked in the breathtaking coastal scenery.
Arriving at the picturesque George Inlet Lodge, which once served as an old cannery bunkhouse, we were greeted with the rustic charm and warm hospitality that make this destination so special. Our visit began with a craft beer-tasting session featuring five beers from two local breweries. Each beer was expertly paired with delectable local delicacies: crab chowder, smoked salmon dip, steaming hot Dungeness crab, and a delightful piece of blueberry-topped cheesecake. The combination of flavors was exquisite, offering a true taste of Alaska’s culinary treasures.
After indulging in the delicious meal and craft beers, we took some time to explore the lodge and its beautiful surroundings. The serene atmosphere and scenic views provided the perfect backdrop for reflection and relaxation.
This half-day adventure was the ideal mix of thrills and chill time. From the excitement of the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show and the off-road UTV ride through the rain forest to the leisurely cruise and gourmet experience at George Inlet Lodge, every moment was filled with awe and delight. As we made our way back to port, we carried with us unforgettable memories of an extraordinary day in Ketchikan, where the rugged wilderness meets refined cuisine and craft beer excellence.
